Pool Safety

At Southern Elegance Pools we take pool safety very seriously. That’s why we’ve taken steps to ensure that our pools meet or exceed all state and federal pool safety laws, including the Virginia Graeme Baker Act. In Jacksonville, Florida, the safety requirements for swimming pools are governed by the Florida Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act. For more details visit: https://www.cpsc.gov/ and https://www.poolsafely.gov/. Here are your pool safety options:

Protecting people from getting inside your pool from outside your property.

  • Yard Fence and Gates that meet pool code: All swimming pools in Jacksonville must have a fence or barrier that is at least 4 feet high and surrounds the entire pool area. The fence or barrier must also have a self-closing and self-latching gate that opens away from the pool area.
  • A Screen Enclosure with doors that meet pool code.
  • An Automatic Pool Cover- A pool cover that meets the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards is an acceptable alternative to a fence or barrier.

Protecting people from getting into your pool from inside your house.

  • Install a child safety barrier that meets pool code. Guardian Pool Safety Fences is a local company that we recommend.
  • Buoy float alarm or on deck alarm complying with ASTM F2208-08 Ensure that your pool has an approved pool alarm that sounds when the water is disturbed or the pool cover is removed.
  • Home alarms that comply UL 2017. Ensure that all doors and windows that provide direct access to the pool area have an alarm that sounds when the door or window is opened.
  • An Automatic Pool Cover that complies with ASTM F 1346-91.

If you have young children:

We strongly recommend that you use a solid barrier such as a, child safety fence, (as mentioned above ), between your home and your pool. A gate is able to be added that meets pool code. We also recommend swim lessons such as ISR or Jax Mobile Swim.

If you’re having a party:

We strongly suggest that you hire a lifeguard or use a designated pool watcher system, in which at least 1 responsible adult is paying full attention to the swimmers and pool at all times.

Drain & Drain Covers:

If there is a broken or missing drain cover, this should be replaced immediately, and the pool shall remain closed until repaired. In addition, even with the new codes and the Virginia Graeme Baker Act Act, we strongly recommend avoiding playing around the drains, and not allowing hair to be directly over them.

Pool Safety for Dogs

image

Swimming pools can be a great source of fun and exercise for dogs, but they can also pose safety risks if certain precautions are not taken. Here are some tips to help keep your dog safe in and around swimming pools:

  1. Teach your dog to swim: Not all dogs are natural swimmers, so it’s important to teach your dog to swim in a safe and controlled environment. Start in shallow water and gradually move deeper as your dog becomes more comfortable.

  2. Supervise your dog: Never leave your dog unsupervised around a swimming pool. Even if your dog is a strong swimmer, accidents can happen, and it’s important to be there to intervene if needed.

  3. Use a life jacket: Consider using a life jacket for your dog, especially if they are not a strong swimmer or are still learning to swim. A life jacket can help keep your dog afloat and make it easier for you to rescue them if necessary.

  4. Secure the pool area: Make sure the pool area is secure and that your dog can’t accidentally fall in. This may involve putting up a fence or using a pool cover.

  5. Provide easy access: Make sure your dog has a safe and easy way to get in and out of the pool. Consider using a ramp or steps designed specifically for dogs.

  6. Rinse your dog: After swimming, rinse your dog off with clean water to remove any chlorine or other pool chemicals that could irritate their skin.

By taking these steps, you can help ensure that your dog stays safe while enjoying the benefits of swimming in a pool. Selecting the Best Spot for a Swimming Pool

Best Spot for a Swimming Pool
Ponte Vedra, Florida

Southern Elegance Pools guides you in choosing the best spot for a swimming pool. Elevate your outdoor space with expert advice and create a haven of luxury. We are a swimming pool builder in Jacksonville, Florida that wants to keep our customer’s wants and needs in mind at all times. When a homeowner decides to have a swimming pool, they often think about the size, shape, material selections, or different features they want to include.  But where should you place the pool? The placement of a pool in your yard is an extremely important factor to consider and we are here to help you choose the Best Spot for a Swimming PoolWhat determines the best location of the pool will depend on the shape and size of your yard, the main function you want to use the pool for, your city building codes, and homeowner’s association rule.

City and County Rules

When it comes to the house location, many city building codes recommend having a distance from the pool and the house. Each county in Jacksonville, Florida has different rules and requirements as to how close you are allowed to build your swimming pool from the property line and your home. Your pool builder and designer will help you with this as you plan the pool’s location.

House Location

A house can cast shade over a swimming pool.  You have the option to keep the water cool or have sunlight reflecting the oasis. Keep in mind if the pool is very close to the home, people will walk around it, possibly getting drenched, and nobody wants that. Adding a pool deck comes in handy, especially for a place to sit, walk, or have a barbecue.

View from the Inside of your Home

A lot of people think that they only use a swimming pool when they are in their backyard, but when placed in the right location it will be used all the time.  For this reason you will want to consider the view of your pool from inside of your home as well as when you are outside.

North, South, East, or West?

Most pool builders in Jacksonville will tell you that the pool placement should be where it gets most of the sunlight. The reason for this is that it helps keep the right temperature and allows swimmers to stay in the water for a longer time. You should also consider if you get more morning sun or afternoon sun.

Keeping a Proper Distance Between a Swimming Pool and Trees

Trees in a backyard can affect the location of the pool.  Although trees provide shade, breeze, and beauty to a home, they can cause countless problems to a pool in the long run.  Trees can cause the water in your pool to get dirty more quickly.  Leaves and branches can fall into the water, which means cleaning your pool more often.  Also, tree roots expand, and they can damage the pool shell if located too close to one.  If the backyard is spacious, the homeowner can have both. It is not impossible to have a pool and a tree in the garden; it is all a matter of space.

Plants in the Backyard

Installing a swimming pool could affect your garden’s natural green area and plants due to the necessary digging that must go on during the construction process. When considering adding landscaping after your pool is installed you will want to avoid certain plants that bring dirt and insects into your pool’s water.  Ask your pool designer and landscaper on recommendations to which plants are good for a backyard with an oasis and pool placement.

Once you have considered all these factors, you can decide the orientation of your pool. We recommend that you seek the help of a pool specialist from Southern Elegance Pools to avoid mistakes and thus enjoy your pool for much longer.
